There are many scholarship opportunities for students planning to attend college.   Such scholarships include, but are not limited to the following:

Merit Scholarships.  Scholarships are awarded for a strong academic performance the student has displayed.  Many academic scholarships require success in a student's high school grade point average, class rank and ACT/SAT test score.  These scholarships are academic based much like the Louisiana TOPS award and scholarships offered from colleges and universities upon a student's acceptance to the school.  In order to receive an academic scholarship, students must meet the scholarship requirement of the institution.  Since these standards vary from school to school, please check with your Admissions Counselor to see if you qualify for an academic scholarship from the schools you wish to apply.

Performance Scholarships.  Other scholarships are performance driven such as athletic, band or dance awards.  If you are interested in being awarded a performance scholarship, please check with the college you are interested in attending to find out more about their leadership/performance scholarships.  Many of these scholarships require tryouts through the department giving the award.

Departmental Awards.  It's always a great idea to check with individual departments at the colleges/universities to see if they have dollars to be given out.  For example, if you are majoring in Business, there may be a scholarship just for business majors.  For private schools, such as liberal arts, there may be dollars set aside for students majoring in ministry.  It never hurts to ask!

If you are fortunate enough to receive a scholarship, please make sure you understand the terms and agreement to keeping the award.  Many scholarships require that you maintain a certain grade point average while receiving the money.  Be sure to read and understand the criteria for accepting each award.
